Installation of photovoltaic system for the Kwalukonge Health Centre

The Health Centre in Kwalukonge is a part of the Diocese of Tanga and is situated approx. 25 km south of Mombo. It was opened on 1 July 2007. A solar photovoltaic system should be installed on its premises in order to guarantee sustainable and cheap electricity supply for medical services. Due to the inconvenient location and poor infrastructure there are no other options for public electricity supplies.

The Kwalukonge Health Centre was opened in July 2007. It offers medical services to around 20.000 people from 14 neighbouring villages. It is hard to employ medical staff for long periods because of poor energy supplies and lack of minimum standards. Since the Health Centre is in a remote area it is important to emphasise the security aspect, i.e. security lights in the whole complex of the Health Centre. Solar energy should also provide energy for the mortuary.

During the dry season, like Lukange, Kwalukonge can also be reached by four wheel drive vehicle. They, however, cannot drive faster than 20km/h. During the rainy season it is very hard or even impossible to reach Kwalukonge. After the opening of the Health Centre Kwalukonge, streets that are in poor condition are now being repaired. The costs are covered by the state. There are plans to upgrade this Health Centre to a hospital later. The installation of the solar panel should be carried out by Tanzanian staff trained in Austria and with the help of Karanga Technical Training Centre (KTTC).

Basic medical services should be offered at affordable cost to all of 20.000 citizens of the neighbouring villages of Kwalukonge and bigger villages such as Magamba-Kvalukonge, Changarikwa, Makole, Mkalamo, Toronto, Kwesewa, Pasilasi and Makayo. Furthermore, nurses, medical officers and doctors should stay longer in order to create good working environment.
